today. 70s, 8 0z everyone 90s showing up we'll talk about that coming up. good morning everybody. happy 4th of july one and all. i'm frank mallicoat. grace has the morning off. it is 6:00 on this monday. and we begin with a deadly shooting by bart police under investigation by two agencies this morning, kristy siefkan is in san francisco where the shooting actually shut down the civic center bart station last night. she joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank. it was about 89:30 last night here at civic center bart station that police received a call about a suspicious man that was wobbling near the tracks possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. and carrying a knife. shortly thereafter the bart police respond and had within a minute shot the man then taken to the hospital and died about 10:00 p.m. i spoke with the p.i.o. for san francisco bart a bit earlier today and he said that one of the officers actually sustained minor cuts and

bruises during that shooting last night. but police are not saying how he sustained that injury. an even bigger question that still remains here is why the suspect was shot in the first place. police have not confirmed the reason for shooting or whether the suspects were shot by one officer or by both but they say that investigations are underway. >> preliminary reveals broken glass at the platform location. two knives at the same location. we have two to three credible witnesses at this time that are being interviewed as are the officers. san francisco p.d. responded almost immediately with bart p.d. they're involved with the investigation as well as bart p.d., san francisco's d.a.'s office. >> reporter: police have confirmed that the suspect was a white man. that one of the bart officers involved was also a white man. the other officer was an asian man. as you heard from the officer multiple agencies involved in this investigation this is being investigated as a criminal investigation by san

francisco police department and bart is certainly going to look into policies and procedures and see if they were appropriately followed. for people commuting today on bart you don't have to worry about the civic center station closed down. while it was shut down last night after the shooting, there will be regular stops there today or stops that are regular for the 4th of july schedule. back to you. >> we are on holiday. kristy siefkan, live in san francisco, thanks. meanwhile three people confirmed dead following several shootings in the richmond area overnight. they all happened within just a few hours and a couple miles of each other last night. we're live at richmond police headquarters where they're trying to piece it together. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, frank. that's right. police investigators have a busy day ahead of them. four separate shootings, three people killed last night. the first happened around 8:30 at 39th and ohio. the person involved in that shooting was critically hurt but we're told is expected to survive. as you mentioned all of these shootings happened within just three hours of each other. the second shooting happened

around 11:00 a few blocks away in fact. a 19-year-old man killed shot to death in his car while visiting people in the area 3200 block of center avenue. and just 15 minutes later at first and mcdonald avenue a 27- year-old was killed. a second person is the victim and is expected to survive. the fourth shooting happened in north richmond in contra costa county. sheriff deputies just confirmed with us at 10:40 p.m. on the 100 block of west ruby one person was killed in a drive bishooting, another person is still hospitalized. all these shootings happened within a couple miles of each other. it's too early to tell if these are related but definitely investigating that as a possibility. no evidence right now if they are gang related. still no motive and also no suspects in the shooting. i have a lieutenant with the richmond police department tells us actually the number of homicides in richmond has gone down in recent years. so this is one of the worst shooting sprees she can remember in recent memory.

back to you. >> i guess, with three dead and multiple people down. thanks. federal investigators are looking into an emergency landing on a peninsula freeway where a plane actually struck a car while attempting a landing. the cessna 210 touching down in woodside near farm hill boulevard around 7:15 last night. f.a.a. says the plane's left mainlanding gear broke the back window of a car just driving on the freeway. f.a.a. says the pilot did issue a may day call before the landing. good news no reports of injuries on the ground or the pilot. the national transportation safety board is investigating. investigators are trying to determine if fireworks may have caused a fire that burned dozens of cars in south san francisco. the fire happened yesterday at an overflow lot for hertz rental cars on mitchell avenue. some time before 3:00 witnesses spotted cars in flames. you can see the flames there. firefighters found about ten

cars on fire where strong winds fueling the flames. >> the wind blowing in the northeast direction that it is was catching the grass underneath the vehicles because it's an unpaved parking lot and therefore catching more vehicles and more vehicles. so we were chasing basically a grass fire under vehicles that were then catching on fire. >> 45 cars burned in all and the fire continued to smolder for hours. investigators did find some fireworks but not where the fire initially started. witnesses say they heard fireworks but it could have been a popping sound from cars catching on fire. eight remain missing after a boat sunk off of baja california. the boat carrying 44 people in all including 27 americans the mexican navy has confirmed one

death. seven tourists including one crew member are still missing. the boat apparently hitting some rough waters sank immediately. coast guard is assisting in that search now. and the coast guard and local law enforcement agencies are increasing their presence on bay area waterways for the holiday. they will be running spot checks to make sure people have required safety gear on board their boat. nationwide nearly 500 people drowned a year ago. and 90 of those victims were not wearing life vests. also alcohol was a factor in 126 fatal boating accidents during the holiday last year. time now 6:06. not a lot of traffic to talk about, but the weather nothing but superlatives for lawrence karnow on this 4th of july. >> yes. this always a big forecast because we're worried about the fog. last year we had the fog roll in and it really hugged the coastline. today i think again we'll start to see some fog showing up. beginning to see some of that right here and eventually some swings down along the coastline. patchy fog to the beaches later

being held in iran are taking part in a hunger strike. well, the families of two uc berkeley graduates still being held in iran are taking part in a hunger strike. they have been held on spying charges for nearly two years now. sara shourd, their companion who was arrested with them, was released last fall. they went on a hunger strike to protest being cut off from receiving letters from their families here in the states. shourd and the men's family members have launched their own hugger strike to show solidarity for them back in iran. three prominent senators with long experience in foreign matters are in afghanistan today. as joel brown tells us, each of the senators are expressing concerns about the white house's plan to drawn down the troops. >> reporter: key senators are raising doubts about president obama's withdrawal plan for afghanistan. >> it is an unnecessary risk.

a deadly bart police sho back now at 6:17. get you caught up with some of the stories on this 4th of july. a deadly bart police shooting under investigation in san francisco this morning. a man said to have a knife was shot and killed by bart officers. that happened at the civic center station last night. one officer suffered minor injuries as well. three people are confirmed dead. several others injured in multiple shootings in the richmond area all happened within two miles of each other. we'll have a live report coming up at 6:30. and cal train is expected to have cameras on its trains at the end of the year. they'll record everything from accidents to suspicious activities along the tracks. all right, folks, just getting up on this 4th of july it is looking like another hot one outside though. not quite as hot as yesterday.

aren't saying much yet what prompted at least one officer to open fire on a man in san francisco. the deadly shooting happened last night at civic center bart station. bart police were called there about a man who appeared to be drunk and who was brandishing a knife. within seconds of their arrival the man was shot on the platform. one of the officers also injured. >> the officer suffering from cuts and bruises on his arm, minor cuts and prizes on his arm. the suspect is a white male. the two officers involved one is white and one is asian. >> investigators are still talking this morning with witnesses to that shooting. it's being investigated by both the bart police and the san francisco police. and once again that was happening at the civic center bart station. gunfire at multiple locations in the richmond area overnight and now three people are confirmed dead. several others are in the hospital. they are with shots -- it happened within just a couple

of miles of each other those shootings. let's go to elizabeth live now with the very latest at the richmond police headquarters with the latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, frank. that's right. four separate shootings leaves three people dead. this all happened within several miles of each other and within just about three hours. the first shooting happened around 8:30 last night. a man was shot at 39th and ohio avenue. we understand he's in critical condition but expected to survive. now the second shooting happened around 11:00. in that case it was just a few blocks away a 19-year-old bailey was killed shot to death in his car while visiting people in the area at 3200 center avenue. now just 15 minutes later at first and mcdonald avenue 26- year-old daryl duncan was killed. a second victim we're told is expected to survive. the fourth shooting happened in north richmond in contra costa county. sheriff deputies confirm with us that 10:40 p.m. last night in the 100 block of west ruby one person was killed

in a drive-by shooting. another person in that case was hospitalized. now with me is lieutenant french with the richmond police department. now, i guess there's still no confirmation that all of these shootings, four separate shootings, are related but obviously you're investigating that as a possibility. >> correct. our detectives are here on scene and they're definitely looking into the possibility that these might be related. >> reporter: is there any evidence that this might be gang-related at this point? >> we don't have anything that indicates this might be gang- related but that's definitely a possibility also. >> reporter: and any suspects so far? >> no suspects at this time. that's why we're looking for any witnesses, anybody with any information to come forward. >> reporter: and you had mentioned the number of homicides in richmond had actually gone down in recent years. this is one of the worst shooting sprees i guess you've seen in a while? >> we haven't seen a night like this where we've had several shootings and homicides in the same night for quite some time. >> reporter: okay. so obvious it's going to be a busy day for you guys

and 94 in fairfield. even 80s and 90s inside the bay. 60s out towards the coastline. much cooler weather on the way. talk about that in a few minutes. back to you. i'll take it, lawrence. bart and muni running on a sunday schedule. extra muni service for the fireworks show though. golden gate transit, sam transand ac transit running on sunday schedules as well as cal train. it will also have extra trains for fireworks shows in san francisco tonight. fireworks may have sparked a fire that torched dozens of cars in south san francisco over the weekend. the fire broke out in a car rental overflow lot on mitchell and harris behind the motel 6 near sfo. the flames damaged as many as 37 cars on a grassy lot leased by hertz rent a car. took about an hour for firefighters to get the fire under control. firefighters initially responded to a call for a grass fire. by the time they got there

right now.... kristy siefkin is in the 4- thousand block o we have some breaking news to tell you about in san francisco happening right now. kristy siefkan is in the 4000 block of mission street on the scene of a smoky fire. she joins us with what's going on there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank. we arrived here just a few minutes ago and we were told by the fire department and by residents around 6:00 this morning a fire broke out inside these structures. this is at 4020 mission street just off 280. as you can see the plumes of smoke going into the air. all people were evacuated safely however one woman was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries for smoke inhalation. a dog also being treated for smoke inhalation in the street and another dog just found out still inside the building. officers are going inside or firefighters inside trying to find that animal. fire does seem to be contained

now. the smoke flooding down the streets. residents standing across the street looking at their homes and glasses being busted out of the windows. definitely the surrounding area you can smell the fire, see the fire all surrounding streets have been closed off. [ indiscernible ] hoping to follow up with the fire department in just a minute to get more details. just to recap three buildings caught on fire. fire is contained. one nonlife threatening injury to an adult female. all inside the building have been accounted for. back to you. >> do they have any idea -- i know it's very early you just arrived any idea how it may have started? >> reporter: i'm sorry. you are asking about how the fire started there have been no statements about the cause of the fire yet. we're hoping to follow up with that. give you more information as soon as we have it. >> okay. kristy siefkan just on the scene of a fire in the mission

trouble as well. let's get an update now. >> reporter: thank you, frank. i'm here at 4020 mission street just over my shoulder three structures went into flames around 6:00 this morning. firefighters do not know the cause of the fire, but all buildings have safely been evacuated. as you stated before one woman was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation and actually one dog at our last update had been brought outside the building for smoke inhalation. another was missing. they've since found that second dog and also treating it for smoke inhalation. both dogs were taken away on a gurney. they'll continue to be treated off site. i talked to some residents on the scene earlier and they said they woke to the smell of smoke to neighbors banging on their doors woke them up. everyone was able to safely evacuate. when asked about what they thought might be the cause of the fire they said they think it may have started in the garage. so on the ground floor of this multiple story building the garage filled with lots of

items and car spread up to higher levels of the building and surrounding buildings. firefighters have been in there working for the past hour breaking out all the glass and windows. smoke has been flooding out. you can see off the side of the 280 freeway. and dozens of misplaced residents currently standing right across the street certainly wondering what the state of their home is like. back to you. >> we just saw the two dogs. they looked pretty healthy. they're okay then? she apparently can't hear me but the dogs look like they're in good shape. more coming up today at noon. another developing story. bart police aren't saying yet what prompted at least one officer to open fire at a man in san francisco. the deadly shooting happened last night at civic center bart station. bart police called there about a man who appeared to be drunk and was brandishing a knife. within seconds of their arrival the man was shot on the platform, one of the officers also injured. but just minor. a bloody night in the

richmond area as well. three people died. several others hurt. and multiple shootings within a two mile area. the first happened about 8:30 on ohio avenue. a man now in critical condition after that. and then about 10:40 on west ruby avenue one person shot and killed another injured. this happened in an unincorporated part of north richmond. about half an hour later one person killed on the 3200 block of center avenue. police say the 19-year-old man was shot in his car as he was preparing to leave after visiting some friends. and then in a fourth incident at 11:15 a 27-year-old man was kill and had another man hurt. this happened at the first street and mcdonald avenue. police are investigating whether the shootings are connected. we'll have much more coming up today at noon. a very does busy day even though it's a holiday. weather-wise we're looking good. and over the weekend we had the heat advisories. very hot around the bay area. temperatures are going to cool down a little bit today. probably not going to see
